The Body Keeps the Score
Bessel van der Kolk’s book, The Body Keeps the Score, reveals how closely intertwined our minds and bodies are. I often feel stress physically resulting in a tightening of my chest which affects my breathing. This project responds to our physical responses to strong emotions, particularly stress and anxiety.
Culture places a very high value on our ability to be independent and be in control of our bodies, two things disabled people often feel judged about. In his book Lennard Davis uses the phrase ‘TAB - Temporarily Able-Bodied’ recognising that at some point, most people will experience disability and require help in some form. I want to draw attention to societies need to see beyond disability as something to be avoided, and recognise that it is a part of all our lives.
