Storytelling Through Stitching
Wisdom and imagination need space to develop. Boredom can provide that space but in our fast-moving world of social media and our constant need for feedback we have lost this state of being that allows us to create. Historically, the repetitive actions of much manual labour such as spinning, crocheting, darning and weaving, provided important space where people could come together and stories could develop and be shared.
Creating for me comes in many different forms and has always provided a refuge and a calm space for me to escape a chaotic world! I believe that once actions become automatic, your mind is free to wander into a state of ‘boredom’ and from there, to imagine.
I am currently exploring this through visible mending – taking worn (out) garments and using darning and the Japanese techniques of Sashiko to give them a chance of a new story – and me the space to imagine and tell their stories.
